What makes a shingle a “cool roof” shingle?
Cool roofs are designed to reflect more sunlight and release absorbed heat. Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) combines these properties for a specific product and color. It helps compare rated materials; it does not predict your attic temperature or electric bill. Special granules can make some darker-looking colors more reflective than their appearance suggests.
What is different about Atlas Pinnacle Sun?
Atlas Pinnacle Sun uses 3M Cooling Granules to reflect solar heat. Atlas also lists 3M Scotchgard Protector to help resist algae staining, 3M Smog-Reducing Granules, HP42 construction, and Class 3 impact resistance. Cool Oyster 2.0 has a manufacturer-listed SRI up to 25; the other currently displayed cool colors range up to 19–21. Exact color, current local supply, and the complete roof system matter. An impact rating does not make a roof hail-proof.
Atlas advertises wind protection up to 160 mph when Pinnacle Sun is installed as part of a qualifying Signature Select system and applicable warranty terms are met. Ask for a proposal that names the starter, shingles, ridge accessories, underlayment, ventilation, flashing, and conditions for the offered coverage. A system warranty should not be compared with a quote covering only the shingles.
Will it save money in Charlotte?
The U.S. Department of Energy’s cool roof guidance explains that reflective roofs can reduce solar heat gain and cooling demand. Insulation and roof conditions matter, and reduced winter heat gain can offset some summer benefit. Your roof’s sun exposure, existing color, attic insulation and air sealing, ventilation, HVAC, and the installed price difference all affect the result. We do not claim a fixed savings percentage or payback period for an unmeasured house.
How does Pinnacle Sun compare with other specialty lines?
GAF Timberline HDZ RS and CertainTeed Landmark Solaris are other reflective architectural shingle lines. Their color ratings, availability, and warranty terms vary. A reflective metal roof or a suitable low-slope membrane is a different system. Compare the exact product and color, installed scope, roof pitch, and warranty rather than relying on a “cool” label alone.

Charlotte roof details to compare
A sun-exposed south or west-facing roof can present a different comparison from a heavily shaded roof. Ask the contractor to document the existing shingle, roof pitch, attic conditions, and ventilation rather than applying a savings claim to every home. Compare full installed costs with the same flashing and water-protection work in both proposals. If you are weighing color against reflectance, look at physical samples outdoors and check neighborhood design rules before committing.
When is a cool roof worth considering?
